  5.     A smiling face, symbol of Czechoslovakia's Civic Forum, may
  6. be turning to a frown. Beset by internal wrangling over policy
  7. in the newly emancipated nation, the popular alliance that
  8. swept the communists out of power 15 months ago and installed
  9. dissident playwright Vaclav Havel as President is splitting
  10. into two factions, already represented in Parliament: the
  11. conservative Club of the Democratic Right (CDR) and the Liberal
  12. Club.

  14.     The move was initiated by Finance Minister and C.D.R. mentor
  15. Vaclav Klaus, who is overseeing the transition from a state-run
  16. economy to the free market. In October the outspoken Klaus won
  17. an upset victory as Forum chairman over Havel's chosen
  18. candidate. Many members of the loosely aligned Liberal Club are
  19. longtime associates of Havel's and opposed Klaus in that vote.
  20. "We have decided on a divorce, Czech-style," Klaus said,
  21. "between a majority that elected me [chairman] and a minority
  22. view."
